HEALTH COMMUNICATION

Effective communication for physiotherapy continuing professional development

Thank you for checking out my speaking page. Glad to see you here.

I understand the challenge of finding just the right speaker. Over the years I have attended numerous trainings from in house workshops to large professional conferences.

I quickly realised that the success of an event came down to the quality of the speakers. If they hit it out of the park, the event was great. If they didn’t, well … the event was not so great.

You can spend many hours researching speakers, to make sure you have the right fit. My hope is that this page will make it easy for you to get the information you need to make the best decision possible.

Thanks for stopping by. Thanks also for considering me. I’m honoured.

What You Can Expect

Here’s what you can expect from me and my team:

  1. Prompt, professional replies to your phone calls and email messages.
  2. A personal phone consultation prior to your event, so we can better understand how we can best serve you and your audience.
  3. An announcement about your event on my blog and social media channels. (This assumes that your event is open to the public and you want additional visibility for it.)
  4. A professionally prepared, dynamically delivered presentation focused on achieving the outcomes you want with your audience.
  5. A custom resource page, exclusively created for your attendees. It will include the slides I used in the presentation, along with links to books, articles, and other resources I believe will be helpful.
  6. A quick follow-up communication after the event, to make sure I met your expectations. (I also want to know how you think I can improve.)

A Little Bit About Me

I was a sports physiotherapist for over 30 years. I worked and toured with the Australian Women’s Cricket Team and Australian Women’s Basketball Team for a number of years. As well as various State sporting Teams. I have been fortunate to work with some of the world’s best athletes. I have also worked with some of the most challenging patients. The individual challenges of working with both groups sparked my passion for developing more effective communication skills for clinicians like you.

Since finishing my clinical career in 2009 due to arthritis in my thumbs, I have studied Neuro Linguistic Programming, Motivational Interviewing and Clean Language. I also have a keen interest in neuroplasticity and habit formation and the influence both have on treatment outcomes.

My aim is to bring the most relevant and usable tooks to clinicians looking to better work with unmotivated patients.

I now devote my time to writing, training, consulting, and speaking.

I am currently writing a book on managing unmotivated patients through more effective communication skills which I hope will be published in 2017.

I have been been with my wonderful and supportive partner Gill for 13 years We currently live in Perth, Australia but move every 2-3 years with Gill’s work in the government. In my free time, I enjoy reading, keeping fit and photography.

Having been in the physiotherapy profession for many years, it never ceases to amaze me how the path to becoming great therapists is a never ending learning process. Continuing education has evolved to be so much more than courses on clinical conditions and treatment techniques. While we know the client will benefit from our applied knowledge, experience shows us we are often unsuccessful in gaining the long term results for which we strive. We need to have a much broader awareness of cognitive behaviour, personalities and understanding of the individual. Annette Tonkin provided our team with valuable information enhancing our awareness of the influence language and consulting styles can enhance or diminish our results. Her excellent presentation gave our staff both knowledge and tools to immediately apply in the clinical setting. All therapists need to develop and continue to improve their relationship skills and I thoroughly recommend Annette’s input to all health professionals striving to improve. Annette has extensive professional knowledge and expertise that extends beyond sports physiotherapy. Her passion has always been to apply a broad range of initiatives and also maintain a level of comprehension on the most up to date research in the area of rehabilitation. She applies and retains a caring approach best described as superior to any other allied health care professional I have ever known.

Health Business Advisory Group The inservice training provided by Annette last November was outstanding. The training content was completely relevant to surviving in clinical practice. We learnt about how to improve communication with our staff and with our clients. How building rapport creates better relationships with staff and clients. Better relationships improve staff retention as well as patient compliance with treatment. These factors make a significant difference in the success or failure of physiotherapy practices. We would highly recommend inservice training with Annette. In fact we have employed her services yet again in 2014.
