What is the value of asking an open question versus a closed question?

An open question invites a person to reflect before answering a question. It provides plenty of latitude for how to answer the question.

A closed question constrains the range of possible replies and usually gives a short answer.

Clients managing chronic conditions have ofter spent years being told what to do. This renders them passive in the recovery process and they fail to think about options that can influence the treatment outcomes.

With these clients it can be very useful to ask open questions so that they begin to consider what will work for them and any obstacles they may need to consider.

Your challenge this week is to ask some of your clients open questions that will have them thinking about how they will better manage their conditions.

You may then be able to offer your help in solving problems that they bring up.
